The University of Oxford, one of the world’s leading universities, has launched a short six-week online blockchain course. The Oxford Blockchain Strategy Program is run by the university’s Saïd Business School, in collaboration with GetSmarter, an online education provider focusing on premium short courses.
Blockchain Strategy Online Course
Aimed at business leaders and innovators from all sectors, the Oxford Blockchain Strategy Program is designed to provide participants with “a comprehensive understanding of what blockchain is and how it works … how it will affect the future of industry and of your organisation … [and] the ability to make better strategic business decisions.”
A strong emphasis is placed on ensuring that business decision-makers have enough understanding of blockchain to make organizational decisions.
The online course consists of six (weekly) modules in addition to an initial orientation module:
- Understanding blockchain
- The blockchain ecosystem
- Innovations in value transfer
- Decentralised apps and smart contracts
- Transforming enterprise business models
- Blockchain frontiers
The online course is currently priced at £2,350 (around $3,000) and the prospectus promises exposure to “industry leaders and global blockchain technology experts” throughout. The recommended amount of self-paced study is 12-15 hours per week and, upon completion, participants will be awarded with a certificate of attendance from Saïd Business School.

Blockchain Software Engineering Course
Oxford University’s Department for Continuing Education, which specializes in courses and programs for adult learners, also offers a course on Blockchain Software Engineering. However, this course is not offered online and is taught in-person in Oxford across a four-day period (accommodation may be available upon request).
This is much more of a technical course, aimed at those with a background in software engineering (although this is not a pre-requisite). The course focuses on different blockchain frameworks, in particular the Linux Foundation’s Hyperledger project to advance cross-industry blockchain technologies.
Students will cover:
- the technical concepts that underpin blockchains;
- the architectural components of blockchain solutions;
- how to design and implement blockchain applications;
- how to create and manage blockchain networks.
The course costs £1,895 (around $2,450) and those who attend the full course will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.
