Ireland’s First Master’s Degree in Blockchain

On 29 May 2019, Heather Humphreys TD, the Irish Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation announced that Ireland’s first ever master’s degree in blockchain will begin in September 2019.

Dublin City University Master’s Degree

Dublin City University is offering Ireland’s first ever master’s degree in blockchain and distributed ledger technologies. The launch came during Blockchain Ireland Week, a Government initiative to bring together the country’s blockchain community and identify opportunities to develop blockchain technology across the island of Ireland.

The Master of Science in Computing (Blockchain – Distributed Ledger Technologies) has been developed by Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet, a non-profit body co-funded by Skillnet Ireland, in collaboration with the School of Computing at Dublin City University.

The aspiration is that the master’s degree will help enhance the country’s blockchain skills and talent pool, enabling Ireland to become a global leader in blockchain technology. For that reason, the program is aimed at IT professionals already in employment in Republic of Ireland registered companies.

“The lack of technical Blockchain skills is of national and international concern as it is a significant inhibitor to Blockchain adoption in companies across key industries including manufacturing, supply-chain, health, food, aviation, finance and the public sector. This new Master’s will provide Ireland with a real opportunity to upskill our already excellent IT professionals, preparing them for jobs of the future.”

Dave Feenan, Acting Network Manager for Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet
